Sources at the BBC were said to be 'rocked' by revelations that Sir Alan Sugar has 'shunned the contestants completely' and scuppered the latest series of The Apprentice, by hiring a Shar-Pei into the prestigious role.

Bitterness broke out in the camp as one of the contestants fumed: "This is typical Alan; he's a narcissist and has simply hired the dog on looks alone". Another high level source added: "We haven't completely got to the bottom of this yet, but it appears that Alan may have hired a distant relative – and this show will not support such blatant nepotism."

Unfortunately, neither Sir Alan or the Shar-Pei were available for comment as they were enjoying a romantic break in Bruges.
